julia weaver, pastor & project artist

Julia began her arts ministry call and chaplaincy in 1996. Fifteen of those years serving in the Dane County Jail with women in worship and spiritual care brought her into contact with women who needed support and a safe space as they returned to their families and communities from incarceration. Backyard Mosaic Women's Project was a response to that need beginning at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in 2004. She served the congregation and South Madison neighborhood for ten years as coordinator of the PromiseKids program, a unique after-school program that creatively combined spirituality and the arts with a family style meal. The Backyard Mosaic Women's Project was then invited to St. John's Lutheran Church in 2010. She is currently serving St. John's Lutheran Church as the Pastor of Arts and Community. Julia is an artist with a special love for fiber work, primarily weaving. Her Doctor of Ministry thesis at United Theological Seminary included a body of woven garments reflecting spiritual themes of beauty and redemption. She offers Wisdom Weaving; A Spiritual Care Practice, commissioned works and installations.
